Ayurvedic Cooking:
Eating Right for Your Mind/Body Type

Various herbs, spices, and seasonings arranged on wooden spoons and scattered on a rustic wooden surface, including salt, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and dried herbs.

"Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." – Hippocrates

Ayurveda, a holistic system of healing that originated over 5,000 years ago, combines philosophy and practicality. At its core are the five elements—ether, air, fire, water, and earth—considered the building blocks of life. These elements shape everything in the material world, including our individual constitution and the tastes of the foods we consume. Balancing these elements is essential for maintaining physical and mental health.

The Six Tastes: Foundation of Ayurvedic Cooking

Ayurveda identifies six tastes—sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter, and astringent—each composed of a combination of the five elements. These tastes are not only integral to Ayurvedic nutrition but also influence our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By understanding how these tastes interact with your unique mind/body type, you can use them to restore balance and enhance both health and consciousness.

Workshop Highlights

  • 30-Minute Constitution Introduction: Gain insight into your unique mind/body constitution.

  • The Six Tastes: Explore how different foods affect you emotionally and physically, and learn to use the six tastes to balance your health.

  • Building an Ayurvedic Kitchen: Discover the essential tools, spices, and ingredients for creating meals that nourish and restore balance.

Let the Right Diet Do the Balancing Act

The vital energy of food, known as prana or vitae, nourishes and invigorates both the body and mind. Food also holds therapeutic properties that can promote healing. You’ll learn how to:

  • Prepare meals that are both nourishing and energizing.

  • Use herbs and spices to enhance the therapeutic value of your food.

  • Incorporate beverages thoughtfully to support digestion and overall health.

The Meal

This workshop includes the preparation of a full Ayurvedic meal featuring five dishes:  the first course cleanses the palate and stimulates digestion.  A small leafy green salad is served before the main dishes and after to encourage proper digestion and assimilation.  The three main dishes include a variety of balanced and nourishing foods that align with Ayurvedic principles.
